There Is No Job Security. Not In The Automation Age.

Foxconn, the largest manufacturer of electronics for brands like Apple and Samsung, confirmed that it has replaced 60,000 workers with robots. Foxconn also claims that these workers will be channelized towards more important roles like quality control where human intervention is necessary. But as reality would have it, surely not all of them can be fit in important roles because all their life, they have trained only to perform monotonous tasks.
If you think it is the case for physical labourers only, you are sadly mistaken. One of the most romantic recruitment partnerships in India, too is going through tough times. Flipkart recently postponed the induction of recruits from IIM-A this year. This is probably the first time a news like this has gone viral because of the brand names involved, but this has been happening frequently in Engineering. L&T also joined Flipkart today in withdrawing more than 1500 job offers it had issued. It’s been predicted that by the end of this year, joblessness will be much bigger a problem than it was at the time of the great depression.

There Is No Job Security. Not In The Automation Age.

It is ironical that just what we did anticipating job security was the very thing that denied us that. We are driven by the fear of losing a job, so we conformed. And sadly, we’ve taught our children too, to conform to a system that was devised to serve a different age. We thought if we all followed the footsteps of a successful personality, we would also become as successful. What we failed to see, is that in fear of losing a job, we are losing ourselves. Which anyway results in us eventually becoming impracticable.

Successful People Put Interests First; Not Fear Of Losing Jobs.

The most successful personalities in any field are ones who neither follow the norm nor fear becoming obsolete. They follow themselves, and continuously find the motivation to equip themselves with skills and knowledge. As they pursue what drives them forward, they excel effortlessly. Such people make the irreplaceable workforce because their motivations have led them to acquire highly specific skill sets, and even cross-specialisations. They are not tied to the idea of a job. They are not in competition with anyone but themselves. They are driven by their motivations.

Want To Thrive? Pick A Niche.

So if you think about it, there is no such thing as job security, which is reliance on an external factor. There only is employability, which is totally internal. Being employable and irreplaceable comes with identifying where your motivation lies, arming yourself with required skills, and continuously updating yourself. With motivation backing you, you are more likely to thrive in such a niche than when you blindly follow norms and try to replicate other personalities, abandoning your very own.
