Unheard of engineering branches.

Everyone’s an engineer.

“In India you first become an engineer, and then you figure out what to do with your life”

India is a multicultural land where everyone seems to have the same qualification irrespective of their field of success. In short everyone here’s an engineer. From the charming Bollywood actress Kirti Sanon to international cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin as well as acclaimed writer Chetan Bhagat. Everyone is an engineer. We are a nation flooded with engineers. However not everyone is pursuing engineering in the same field.

engineering branches

Being a vast and ever expanding subject engineering has numerous fields although the most popularized and sought after fields are known and hence always saturated with talent. How many of you know of the unheard of fields of engineering. Fields where a rare few venture towards. Well here we list out a few engineering core’s which aren’t as famous or saturated as Mechanical, Civil, Computer science, Electrical or Communication cores.

Aerospace Engineering

Aerospace is a specialised branch of engineering which deals with the design and development of aircraft’s as well as space crafts. Covering aspects of two branches of engineering – aeronautical and astronautical engineering. The course also focuses on new technologies in aviation, defence systems, and space exploration. It is offered at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels awarding B.Tech and M.Tech degrees.

Metallurgical Engineering

The metallurgical engineering prepares students to meet the growing needs of the Indian industry in the field of metallurgical and materials engineering. Students acquire knowledge about developing high-quality metal products throughout the various stages of the manufacturing process as well as how to test and inspect the final product. They are trained in areas like extraction, physical and mineral processing. Transforming natural mineral resources into useful products for society. The course also teaches about pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy.

Tool Engineering

Tool engineering is based on the use and application of various industrial tools within a manufacturing set-up. Candidates learn to to plan the process of manufacture, develop various tools and machines. Additionally integrate facilities required for producing particular products with minimal expenditure of time, labour and material. Coursework is designed to include the art of designing jigs, fixtures, press tools, creating die casting designs, plastic moulds designs, mastering advanced plastic processing technologies and becoming perfect in metrology and measurements.

Petroleum Engineering

Petroleum Engineering is a branch of science which deals with the study of extraction of crude oil and natural gas present in deposits found below the surface of Earth. Students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Petroleum Engineering study about reservoirs of oil and gas. It’s economic extraction, storage and transportation. The course also elaborates on the procedures required in drilling the surface of the earth for refining petroleum products.

Biotechnology Engineering

Biotechnology engineering is the study, research and development of bio-organism, micro-organism and cell functions in living beings. The course combines engineering with other subjects like chemistry, genetics, bio-chemistry and microbiology. Biotechnology covers different fields of work like agriculture, disease research, eco-conservation, fertilizers, vaccines, energy production and animal husbandry. The programme focuses on areas like Enzymology, GM products and drug designing among others.

Bio Engineering

While traditional engineering applies physical and mathematical sciences to analyze, design and manufacture inanimate tools, structures and processes. Biological engineering uses primarily the rapidly developing body of knowledge known as molecular biology to study and advance applications of organisms and to create biotechnology.

Environmental Engineering

Traditionally, environmental engineering was a branch of civil engineering and was variously called sanitary engineering and public health engineering. However, with the coming of dedicated higher education options in the environment during the 1980s, it found its own niche. Environmental engineering is a multidisciplinary subject that borrows ideas from a number of different sciences as well as fields of engineering to understand environmental issues and engineer design solutions for these.

Chemical Engineering

Chemical Engineering deals with the design, development of processes and operation of machines and plants through which the physical or chemical state of materials undergo various changes. Developments in chemical practices have led to more advanced fields like Nanotechnology, Bio-Engineering, Bio-Molecular Engineering, Material processing etc.

Petrochemical Engineering

Petrochemical engineering is a branch of Chemical Engineering which deals with operations involved in refining petroleum or crude oil by the use of advanced technology. The course also includes extraction of crude petroleum obtained from the core of earth. Students learn about the mechanism and techniques involved in activities like exploration, production and exploitation of oil or natural gases. On completion students can work in job profiles like petroleum geologists, drilling engineers, reservoir engineers and production engineers.

Mining Engineering

Mining engineering is offered as a specialised branch in engineering. Including areas like mine-surveying, mining mechanization and industrial minerals. The course also deals with research in areas like of ventilation, rock mechanics, underground and surface environment, geomatics and mine safety. The course is offered at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in leading technical institutes.

Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering

Marine engineers and naval architects design, build, and maintain ships from aircraft carriers to submarines, from sailboats to tankers. Marine engineers are primarily responsible for the internal systems of a ship, such as propulsion, electrical, refrigeration, and steering.

Ocean Engineering

Ocean engineering refers to the engineering activities that are carried out in the oceanic waters for a number of commercial reasons. This includes construction of platforms for drilling operations and other technological implants, various support structures required for the smooth functioning of oceanic activities. And even hi-tech buoying and energy generation systems. Alongside construction, ocean engineers are also involved in the engineering aspect of devices and equipment required in necessary oceanic studies and researching activities.

Mechatronics Engineering

Mechatronics Engineering is the branch which includes the study of mechanical engineering, electronics engineering, computer engineering, telecommunications, system engineering and control engineering. It focuses on different aspects of mechatronics like modelling, real-time computer interfacing, sensors, controllers and actuators. After completing the course graduates can work on different aspects like sensing and control systems, automation and robotics, artificial intelligence and expert systems, transportation and vehicular systems and computer integrated manufacturing systems.

Paint Technology

Paint technology is a sub-branch of Chemical Technology. A niche branch of engineering under Chemical Engineering. Hence the course is seen to be offered by few institutes in India. One studies about various ingredients used in the making of paint- raisins, polymers, pigments etc.
